Holiday Celebration: Concert and Tree Lighting, Marcus Garvey Park – Harlem, 5pm – 8:30pm

The tree lighting begins at 5pm with The Marching Cobras and Children singing Carols. Immediately afterward, the party moves indoors at Pelham Fritz Recreation Center with performances by Vy Higginsen’s Sing Harlem Choir and the One Accord Dance Ministry. The emcee will be Musa Jackson AKA the Harlem Ambassador. The buffet is sponsored by neighborhood restaurants and artisanal makers from Harlem. Free.

This Must Be The Place, Dear Mama Coffee – UES, 6pm – 8pm

A literary evening of curated writers reading work both published and in-progress. Across different genres, from celebrated young adult writers to noir, journalism, Op Ed and humor. $5.50.

BEE is a play about Izat, a young Iranian girl trapped in an abusive marriage in the 1940’s. After years of suffering both physically and mentally at the hands of her spouse, she knows the only way she will survive is if she is able to leave him. In an unprecedented move, her father is able to use his influence to secure a divorce for her. The story intertwines with interviews from immigrants who have had to make the difficult choice of leaving their homeland because their survival was at stake. Free.

Past and present collide in Ellen McLaughlin’s mash-up of Sophocles’ classic tragedy Ajax with the modern-day war in Iraq. The play follows the parallel narratives of Ajax, an ancient Greek military hero, and A.J., a modern female American soldier, both undone by the betrayal of a commanding officer. $10 general admission, $5 for students and alumni.

Vanessa Valerio and Anita Flores are bringing some of New York City’s best storytellers and comedians together to recount their absurd experiences about dating in the modern world.This month’s lineup includes comedians Marcia Belsky, Christian Polanco, Katie Haller and Gianmarco Soresi. Proceeds will go to the Hispanic Federation to help Puerto Rico. $8.

This event is a fundraiser for the 2018 season of The Brooklyn Theatre Club. Test your knowledge of all things Great White Way and win prizes.
