Community Rowing, Pier 40 – Greenwich Village, 12pm – 1 pm

Community Rowing events are sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Free.

Traditions Festival, King Manor Museum in Rufus King Park – Queens, 12pm – 4pm

King Manor Museum will host its third annual Traditions Festival. It’s a weekend full of food, music, art, and crafts in Jamaica from the 18th century to modern times. Live music by Talking Drums and folk musicians Larry Moser and Mary Nagin. Free.

Williamsburg/Greenpoint Walking Tour, South Williamsburg Ferry – 440 Kent Avenue, 1pm – 3pm

This walk will introduce the range of waterfront parks and promenades generated through the 2005 rezoning and development of the Domino sugar factory site. Public spaces to be discussed will include: Schaefer’s Landing, Domino Park, Transmitter Park, North 5th Street Park and Pier, and Bushwick Inlet Park. Free.

Around NYC Today (4/15) Spring Performance Festival, Secret Brooklyn

Spring Performance Festival, MoMA PS1 – Queens, 12pm – 6pm

In conjunction with MoMA PS1’s Spring Open House, VW Sunday Sessions presents a performance festival in collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist-run venue Secret Project Robot featuring more than 35 artists. Featuring music performances by Bottoms, Bunny Michael, Macy Rodman, Jennifer Vanilla, and DJ Dog Dick. FLUCT will premiere a new video work and Kathleen Dycaico presents a series of performances featuring Soojin Chang, DeVonn Francis, Sophia Park, and Kellian Delice. Free.

Twisted from Constantly Watching Doves, Dorothy Strelsin Memorial Community Garden – LES, 2pm – 3pm

Twisted from Constantly Watching Doves is a work inspired by imagery from fairy tales collected by Franz Xaver Von Schönwerth, as well as the childhood and daily life experiences of the artists. As a duet for Zack Fuller, a former member of Min Tanaka’s Tokason Butoh Group, and dancer/choreographer/welder/visual artist Emily Smith, it presents two figures on a journey; undergoing a series of transformations that are alternately disturbing, poetic, funny, violent, and sentimental. Secret Brooklyn: An Unusual Guide, Hendrick I. Lott House – Brooklyn, 2pm – 3:30pm

Every borough has its secrets, and Brooklyn boasts some of the most unusual of them all. Untapped Cities’ Michelle Young and Augustin Pasquet have gathered these mysterious locals and legendary spaces into Secret Brooklyn: An Unusual Guide to shed light on these hidden histories. Discover secret museums, learn how to go on an urban safari for wild parrots, discover a performance of robots in a church, find out how to touch the oldest subway tunnel in the world and see the world’s smallest Torah. Free.

Historical interpreter Cheyney McKnight of Not Your Momma’s History will give a lecture on headwraps found among both free and enslaved African Women in America from the 18th to 19th century. Free.

Statehood: 5 Comedians Make a Country from Scratch, Caveat – LES, 9pm – 10:30pm

You know what? That’s it. We’re making our own country. Watch as a team of comedians become the brand new co-rulers of a totally 100% legal sovereign nation. The Montevideo Convention of 1933 sets out several requirements for statehood. Join comedians and co-rulers Eman El Husseini, Usama Siddiquee, Kate Sisk, Fareeha Khan, and Sam Morrison as they give meeting those requirements a shot live on stage, consulting top experts in fields ranging from entomology to armed conflict.
