Spotlight on Still Life – Closing Reception, H.H. Biddle House in Conference House Park – Staten Island, 1pm – 4pm

“Spotlight on Still Life”, curated by artist Ann Marie McDonnell, presents photography from the faculty and students of Curtis High School who were part of an educational program that focuses on the history of the still-life genre through painting and photography, as well as contemporary approaches. Free.

Free Watercolor Classes, Al Oerter Recreation Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park – Queens, 1:30pm – 3:30pm

Painter and filmmaker Ashton Agbomenou will teach three adult watercolor classes demonstrating how to use lines, shapes, and colors to render an image. Nature Photography, Highbridge Park – Washington Heights, 2pm – 3:30pm

Bring your camera and join photographer Michael Palma Mir as you capture rock outcrops, cliffs and trees from behind the lens. Mir will discuss nature photography strategies for dealing with difficult lighting situations, lens and zoom choice for perspective control, and composition, using Highbridge Park and its many vistas. Around NYC Today (1/6) Dolly Parton Party, La Befana, Nerd is the New Black

MulchFest, Various locations, 10am – 2pm

Recycle your holiday tree at MulchFest. Bring your tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city. More than 26,000 trees were recycled last year. Find chipping locations here. Also happening on the January 7th. Free.

La Befana, Building P in Sug Harbor Cultural Center – Staten Island, 2pm – 4pm

La Befana is one of Italy’s oldest holiday traditions. La Befana is known to bring gifts to children at the close of the holiday season. According to legend, she was visited by the three wise men in search of the Christ child. She declined their invitation to join them but later regretted her decision and set off on her own, giving gifts to all children in case one was the Christ child. Enjoy an afternoon of special activities at Snug Harbor, including making your own La Befana and learning a traditional Italian dance. $10 for adults, $5 for kids.
