Summer on the Hudson: Irish Arts Center New York City Irish Dance Festival, Pier I in Riverside Park South – UWS, 1pm – 6pm

Irish Arts Center kicks off Summer on the Hudson’s 2018 season with its annual day-long Irish Dance Festival featuring performances by hundreds of the best Irish dancers. Free.

Freshwater Fishing, Van Cortlandt Park – Bronx, 12pm – 1:30pm

Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Try to hook a pumpkinseed sunfish, carp, or chain pickerel. Whether you choose to grab a simple bamboo pole at a quiet lake or join more advanced saltwater programs, there’s a program that fits your skill level. All equipment is provided. Participation is first-come, first-served. Free.

Community Rowing, Pier 40 – Greenwich Village, 12pm – 1 pm

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Free.

Public Art Opening and Participatory Event with Judith Modrak, Thomas Paine Park – TriBeCa, 10am – 2pm

Our Memories is an installation of seven translucent, neuron-inspired sculptures that contain cavities holding color-coded memory stones. The memory stones are classified into six primary emotive categories: joy, anger, love, sadness, fear, and surprise. During one-day events at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park and Thomas Paine Park, participants will transform two new sculptures by recalling a powerful memory and then sharing the memory by depositing it in a sculpture. Free.
