La Befana, Building P in Sug Harbor Cultural Center – Staten Island, 2pm – 4pm

La Befana is one of Italy’s oldest holiday traditions. La Befana is known to bring gifts to children at the close of the holiday season. According to legend, she was visited by the three wise men in search of the Christ child. She declined their invitation to join them but later regretted her decision and set off on her own, giving gifts to all children in case one was the Christ child. Enjoy an afternoon of special activities at Snug Harbor, including making your own La Befana and learning a traditional Italian dance. $10 for adults, $5 for kids.

New Year’s Day Plunge, Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue – Brooklyn, 1pm

In spite of freezing temperatures, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club will host its annual New Year’s Day Plunge. Thousands of people are expected to flock to the 114th staging of this event. Swim time is at 1pm but organizers suggest to come early. Event is free for swimmers and onlookers but RSVP is necessary. $25 suggested donation. 

Anthropolizing the Bachelor, Caveat – LES, 7:30pm – 10:30pm

Do you love The Bachelor, but have always wanted live commentary by an anthropologist? Of course you have. Hear Ellen Marakowitz, senior lecturer in anthropology at Columbia University and comedian Nadia Pinder dissect the good, the bad, the problematic, and the just plain “people, am I right??” $10.
