Local History: Stories Behind the Street Names, Greenbelt Nature Center – Staten Island, 1pm – 3pm

Richard Simpson, the historian and tour guide of Moravian Cemetery, lectures about the Greenbelt neighborhood’s local history. His talk includes biographical information for people who have towns, streets, schools, and parks named for them. Free.

Target First Saturdays, Brooklyn Museum, 5pm – 11pm

Brooklyn Museum hosts a day of free concerts, a dance festival, a film screening and panel discussions and a dance party in celebration of Black History. Music by The Skins, Latasha Alcindor and Aaron Abernathy. Panel discussions on Jean-Michel Baquiat and Malcolm X. Later in the night, Everyday People hosts a dance Party with performances from DJ mOma, Ian Isiah and Donae’O. Free.

A puppet ballet concieved and choreographed by Penny Jones to the rollicking music of Kabalevsky’s symphonic suite, The Comedians. The puppets look like giant Christmas toys come to life with The Nutcracker man as circus master. $10.

Lauren Carly Shaw: Impressions, Glyndor Gallery in Wave Hill – Bronx, 2pm – 3pm

Artist Lauren Carly Shaw activates her work installed in the Glyndor Gallery. Presented as a durational performance, the artist enters and inhabits her work. A negative impression of her body made of foam and resin is set into a built-in cabinet. Integrating into the architecture of the gallery, Shaw’s performance underlines the role of the body in creating her site-specific work. The show is part of Call & Response, the Glyndor Gallery’s fall exhibition. Free with admission to the grounds: $8 for adults, $4 for students and seniors.
