Ethiopian Coffee Ritual, Dorothy K. McGowan Memorial Garden, 509 W. 158th St – Washington Heights, 5pm – 7pm

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is an important part of Ethiopian culture. It involves roasting coffee beans and preparing boiled coffee in a special vessel akin to the ibriks used to make Turkish coffee. The Dorothy K. McGowan Memorial Garden will be putting on an coffee ceremony and it will be led by our Ethiopian garden committee member Hadi. There will be popcorn for snacking on during the coffee ceremony. Free.

The TAX Collection and Guy Hepner present ‘Con Art’, a solo gallery exhibition by Dan Alva. The Miami-based street artist utilizes his marketing and advertisement background to create satirical works that aim to challenge the messages of recognizable ad campaigns and comment on the excesses of materialism and lifestyle marketing.

Rooftop Painting Workshop, Tony Dapolito Recreation Center, 1 Clarkson Street – West Village, 6pm – 8pm

Join artist Amy Digi for an outdoor water color painting and monotypes printmaking workshop at sunset. Participants will learn how to paint from observation, plus basics about materials, color mixing and composition. You’ll get to take home your painting. Supplies will be provided. Jeremy McQueen’s Black Iris Project, Marcus Garvey Park – Harlem, 7pm – 9pm

Choreographer Jeremy McQueen’s ballet collective, The Black Iris Project, has been using movement to celebrate black artists since 2016. At SummerStage, the performance will include MADIBA, a ballet inspired by the life of the late Nelson Mandela, whose 100th birthday is being commemorated this year. The work, which was selected by the celebrated ballerina, Misty Copeland, and previously performed at the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2017, will be followed by the world premiere of A Mother’s Rite, featuring Alvin Ailey dancer Courtney Spears. Free.

Shakespeare in the Park: King Lear, 35th Avenue and Cross Island Parkway in Crocheron Park – Queens, 7pm – 10:15pm

King Lear has ruled for many years. As age overtakes him, he divides his kingdom amongst his children. Misjudging their loyalty, he soon finds himself stripped of all the trappings of state, wealth, and power that had defined him. Shakespeare’s great tragedy explores the notion of power – who has it, how one obtains it, and how one defines it. Free.
