THINGS TO DO

Flushing Cemetery Walking Tour, Flushing Cemetery –  Queens, 2pm – 4pm

Local historian James Driscoll and horticultural specialists Fred Gerber and Chuck Wade lead an informative tour highlighting key figures and features of this park-like burial ground. The cemetery was first established on the 20 acre farmland of John Purchase, when Queens’ population was 20,000 and expanded in 1875. It is the final resting place of many Bayside Quaker families and such notables as Louis Armstrong, Bernard Baruch, Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Vincent Sardi Sr., and Dizzy Gillespie. The tour group meets at 1:45 p.m. near the door to the Flushing Cemetery Chapel, inside the main gate. $10.
