Around NYC Today (3/27) How to Appear Normal at Social Events, Eucharist Play

THINGS TO DO

How to Appear Normal at Social Events with Lord Birthday, Caveat – LES, 9pm – 11pm

A strange TED-style talk by Lord Birthday, maker of absurd poem-comics and dispenser of wisdom. Chad Murphy –the creator of the Lord Birthday comics–discusses current trends in online art and writing in the context of his own creative trajectory. What kinds of art and writing tend to resonate today, and why? And where might things be going? Chad discusses this and more by sharing stories and observations from both his online work as Lord Birthday as well as from the recent publication of his book How to Appear Normal at Social Events.

The Eucharist Play, 440 Studios – NoHo, 8:15pm – 9pm

The Eucharist Play follows the married couple James and Rock as they clean up after a business dinner. When two unexpected guests arrive, the night descends into a searing event of dangerous games culminating in a stunning revelation. At once a nightmarish fantasia and a realistic portrait of the human heart, the play is a meditation on marriage, privilege, and the innate cruelty of humanity. Free. RSVP.

Every Now and Then I Fall Apart: A Karaoke Reading Series, QED – Queens, 7pm – 9pm

A reading series that is about (and actually is) karaoke. Every month three to four writers will each read a piece about a song—its place in their lives and/or in their karaoke sets—and then perform that song as karaoke. After the readings, members of the audience will have the opportunity to sing karaoke themselves. Featuring Rob Sheffield, Grace Spelman, Jeremy Larson and Emily Hughes. $5.
